Bernadette Marie Charland lost her short but fierce battle with pancreatic cancer on Dec. 10, 2005. She died as she lived, with a quiet dignified strength surrounded by her family. She was born on May 7, 1934, in Howland. She graduated from Waterville High School. She managed the St. John the Baptist school cafeteria and the senior citizens' lunch program. She worked for the New England Telephone Co. in the computer room. She also worked at St. John's Credit Union as a teller. No matter what job she did, she brought joy, laughter and lots of fun. She loved people and was the life of the party. Bernadette was a member of the Caring Friends Association (formerly known as the Exchangettes). She saw beauty in everything and everyone she met. She loved people and had a special place in her heart for the less fortunate, especially those with mental illnesses. She helped organize Christmas parties for the Waterville Social Club. She always had a kind word of encouragement and a smile for all who were lucky enough to cross her path. She had a wonderful sense of humor and brought the gift of laughter wherever she went. Bernadette was an artist. She looked at the world through the eyes of an artist. She didn't just see people, she saw real faces and feelings; and she could capture people's souls in her work. Her work touched many of us deeply, as did her spirit. She was funny and creative, and had a wit that could bring you to your knees in fits of laughter. Our world lost one of its brightest lights today. She will be missed but never forgotten. Bernadette was predeceased by her loving husband of 29 years, Norman W. Charland of Winslow; parents Rose and Henry Pellitier of Waterville; and three brothers, Roland Pellitier of Connecticut, Joel Pellitier of Connecticut and Pearly Pellitier of California.Bernadette will be deeply missed by her three daughters, Tanya and Terry Palmer of Benton, Brenda and Bruce Hall of Florida, and Vicky Craig of Waterville; two sisters, Verna and Babe Loubier of Florida and Simone and Howard Antworth of Vassalboro; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and devoted friends. Bernadette's family wishes to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to all the friends and family who offered their support and encouragement during this difficult time. The family would also like to extend a sincere "thank you" to the medical and nursing staff of MaineGeneral Medical Center and the volunteers and nursing staff of Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oncology Education Fund at MaineGeneral Medical Center. A funeral Mass to celebrate Bernadette's life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at St. John the Baptist Church in Winslow. Arrangements are under the care of Cremation Services of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave, Belfast.
