Bartel John Van Der Wal of Johnson City Bartel John Van Der Wal, 81, of Johnson City passed away at the James G. Johnston Nursing Home on Friday, March 23, 2007, after a long courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born in Albany N.Y. on September 27, 1925 to parents John and Adrienna Van Der Wal who predeceased him. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, the former Margaret (Peg) Spendley. A sister and brother-in-law; Helene and Harold Bauer, Albany, N.Y., a brother-in-law and spouse, Frank and Rosemary Spendley, St. Albans, Vt., a sister-in-law and spouse, Mary and Leo Cody, Binghamton; many very special nephews and nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. Bart graduated from Albany High School and the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School. He also attended Cornell and Harvard Universities. He was employed in several executive capacities by Ansco Corporation in Binghamton, Kalvar Corporation in New Orleans, La., and the newly formed Bulk Mail Division of the US Postal System in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was the recipient of a special achievement award by the University of Pennsylvania for his work in the Secondary School Program while living in Binghamton and was past President of the Alumni Association as well as the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a former member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Albany, N.Y., and of the First Presbyterian Church in Binghamton as well as being actively involved in New Orleans and Pittsburgh Presbyterian Churches. He served as a naval officer during WWII and the Korean War. The family wishes to thank the staff of the James G. Johnston Star Unit of the United Methodist Nursing Home for the dedicated and loving care given to Bart during his residency. It was Bart's wish that there be no calling hours at Laskowski Funeral Home. On Saturday, March 31, 2007, a memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Home Hilltop Campus, 260 Deyo Hill Rd., Johnson City, at 11:00 a.m., and Saturday, April 14th, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. a memorial service will be held at the Bethany Reformed Church in Albany, N.Y., where interment will take place. It is the wish of the family that memorial donations in Bart's name be made to the Star Unit of James G. Johnston Nursing Home, 260 Deyo Hill Rd., Johnson City, N.Y. 13790 or to the Bethany Reformed Church, 760 New Scotland Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12208. Arrangements and services by:
