Barbara Tillinghast Jones April 23, 1921 - May 2, 2009 SUMMERVILLE, SC, - Barbara T. Jones passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 2 at the Presbyterian Home in Summerville, South Carolina, her residence for the past eighteen years. Born in Danielson, CT. on April 23, 1921, Barbara was the youngest daughter of the late Everett T. and Agnes (Bliven) Tillinghast of Danielson. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard A. Tillinghast, and sisters, Frances Tillinghast and Mildred Sargent. Ms. Jones was a graduate of Killingly High School in Danielson, Mary Washington College, Virginia and received her masters degree in dietary science from Columbia University, the first member of her family to attain that level of advanced education. Barbara's career in dietary science and management led her to many professional opportunities including: Government Food Inspector during WW II, cafeteria director for Windham, CT High School, Dartmouth College food service director, consultant for a major food distributor in Pittsburgh, food production manager for the Marriott Hotel restaurants in Washington D.C, dietary director for the Rhode Island penal system, and therapeutic dietician for Roper Hospital in Charleston, S.C. Ralph Jones and Barbara were married on October 9th, 1964 in Washington, D.C. Mr. Jones also worked with the Marriott Company and they owned a “Roy Rogers Restaurant” franchise in Newport, R.I. The Jones's retired to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. in 1980. Eventually they moved to the Presbyterian Home in Summerville, S.C. where they enjoyed the friendship of many acquaintances who lived in cottages similar to theirs. Mr. Jones passed away in 1999. Mrs. Jones volunteered numerous hours for the Alston Middle School Library & Main Office in Summerville and was honored for her extensive service by the state of South Carolina which awarded its prestigious Palmetto Award to her in 2000. She also volunteered time at the Home's health center. She leaves many friends from the Home and Alston School including Pat McTeer who was her healthcare advocate and companion, Home residents Dorothy Brown and Jean Wattley and Alston Library coordinator Gin-G Edwards and Alston Office person, Nancy Brown and Staff. Also to be recognized for their caring love and support are the many members of the Home's healthcare nursing staff who cared for Barbara during her final years in that unit. Surviving family members include Diane Jones Richards and her husband Bill of Florida, and nephews: Avery & Cynthia Tillinghast of Canterbury, CT, Andrew and Elaine Tillinghast of Danielson, CT, John and Diane Tillinghast of Hampton, CT and Wesley and Elaine Sargent of Wethersfield, CT and William and Edna Sargent of The Villages, FL. Memorial services celebrating Barbara's life will be held at the family's convenience. Those wishing to donate to the Barbara T. Jones Memorial Fund to benefit Alston Middle School may send gifts to treasurer, Avery Tillinghast at 511 Brooklyn Road, Canterbury, CT 06331. Tillinghast Funeral Home, 433 Main Street, Danielson is in charge of arrangements.
