Patterson, Barbara StevensSept. 5, 1930 - April 27, 2011Barbara S. Patterson, beloved mother and grandmother, of Sarasota, formerly of Longboat Key, passed away April 27, 2011. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 7, at 11:00 a.m. at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel. Burial will be alongside her husband MG (ret.) James H. Patterson, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. at a later date. Survivors include her three daughters; Carol L. Patterson and husband Steve of Ft. Worth, Texas, Linda K. Patterson Italiano and husband Sal of Tampa, and Leslie A. Scott and husband Bob of Rolling Hills, Calif..; brother Kent Stevens and wife Mary R. of Purcellville, Va.; and six grandchildren, Matthew, wife Shea and Whitney Patterson; Eric and Keith Sutliff, and Lauren and Bryan Scott. Barbara was born in Boston, Mass. Sept. 5, 1930 to Betty and Ralph Stevens. After attending public schools in Arlington, Mass. she graduated with a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts, at Amherst, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a dedicated U.S. Army Officer's wife for 28 years and an extraordinary and loving mother. She was extensively involved in volunteer and charity work for The American Cancer Society, The American Red Cross and Project Literacy. She enjoyed teaching Pre School, Kindergarten and tutoring children with special needs. Her hobbies included tennis, travel, cooking, sailing with her husband and friends, the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association, and spending time with her grandchildren. Barbara loved her husband, "Jim," her children, grandchildren, friends and family.She was an incredible "lady" who led by example and left the world a much better place for having lived. She was a "special gift" and will be missed by all who knew her. Memorial contributions may be made in Barbara's honor to the Michael J.
