READFIELD -- Barbara P. Nelson, 84, of Readfield, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.She was born in Augusta, Aug. 27, 1927, the daughter of Ernest and Thelma (Bennett) Hassen. Barbara grew up in Augusta and was a graduate of Cony High School. She worked at the Stevens School for Girls for a few years and later at Augusta Mental Health Institute for many years until her retirement.Barbara hunted when she was younger, but grew to love animals, especially dogs and cats. She enjoyed going to camp, playing cards, going out to eat with friends and especially doing things for her grandchildren.Mrs. Nelson was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Nelson; her son, Ronnie Baston; and her close friend, Stanley Bamford.She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen True, and her husband, Paul, of Fayette; six grandchildren, Paul True Jr., Dean True and his wife, Josette, Dawn True, Debbie True, Amanda Baston and Rhonda Baston; her great-grandchildren, Riley, Mason, Katelyn and Kurstyn True, Lake and Brooke McKechnie, Melody, Slade and Maree Meranda; as well as her beloved dog, Abby.Relatives and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday Nov. 5, 2011, at Fayette Corner Cemetery.
