Obituary of Barbara May


BARBARA BIEKER MAY Barbara Bieker May, passed away on the morning of February 29, 2008. Barbara was the daughter of Ruth (Hohman) and Henry N. Bieker, both deceased in 1982. She was born in Hammond and educated at St. Joseph School and Bishop Noll High School in 1956. Barbara studied at Northwestern University before completing her B. A. Degree at National College of Education, 1960. Barbara taught at Lee Caldwell School Hammond in 1961. Between 1960 and 1995, she lived in Hammond where she was President of the Carmelite Junior League of Hammond. She was very active in numerous other civic activities in Northwest, IN. IN 1995, Barbara and her husband Bill moved to their dream house, Mayshore in Beverly Shores, IN. Barbara is survived by her husband of 47 years William R. May and their son William (Rob) May of Sommerville, MA; her other son Officer Christopher Bieker May, preceded Barbara in death in 1991. Barbara is also survived by her brother Henry Nicholas (Nick) Bieker and his wife Sandra of St. John and by their two children: Kim Bieker Gilleo of Valparaiso and Nick Bieker of Mokena; by brother-in-law John and his wife Laura of Avoca, IA and by their two daughters Ellen Figel of Parker CO and Emily Mallcome of Fort Wayne, IN; by Addie May; widow of brother-in-law Dale May of Acworth GA and their two daughters: Jennifer Ray of Minneapolis and Susannah May of Berkeley, CA; by cousins Rosemary Colby of Munster, IN and Mariol Luddy of Indianapolis, IN. Barbara also leaves behind to many great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation will be at Burns-Kish Funeral Home, 5840 Hohman Ave., Hammond, IN on Sunday March 2, 2008 from 3-6pm. A private funeral will be conducted at the convenience of the family. There will be a "Gathering of Friends" later in the year at Mayshore where friends and family can expect many of Barbara's favorite goodies and lots of chocolate to be consumed while exchanging laughter and good stories. Donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America - Christopher May Campership Fund in Munster, IN.
