Barbara L. (Calderara) Smyth, of Braintree, died Saturday, July 6, at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 76 years old and the beloved wife of J. Paul Smyth for 55 years. Born in Quincy on Sept. 8, 1936, she was the loving daughter of Guido and Mary (Biagini) Calderara. She was raised and educated in Quincy, where she raised her own family prior to moving to Braintree 11 years ago. Mrs. Smyth worked for New England Telephone for 30 years. She was a former Girl Scout Leader, Den Mother and PTA member. Despite her 32 year battle with diabetes and 2 year battle with cancer, she remained caring and devoted to her family. She created the most wonderful occasions with her joy of family and culinary talents. Barbara and Pauls loving relationship set a true example of marriage and devotion. She leaves a legacy of strength and courage. Mrs. Smyth was the cherished mother of Sharon L. McGarty and her husband Michael, Paul J. Smyth of the Braintree Fire Department and his wife Barbie and Gary A. Smyth, Deputy Fire Chief of the Quincy Fire Department and his loving children. She was the doting and loving grandmother of Jennifer, Kevin, Greg, Rebecca, Amanda, Brendan, Bridget and Caroline, all of Braintree. She was the dear sister of the late Richard Calderara and is also survived by many extended family and wonderful friends. Arrangements were made by the Bolea-Buonfiglio Funeral Home, 116 Franklin Street, Quincy. A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, July 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Johns Church, 44 School Street, Quincy. Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, July 9, from 4 - 8 p.m. Interment in Plain Street Cemetery, Braintree.
