PENACOOK -- Barbara L. Brown, 86, formerly of Contoocook, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, after a short illness. She was born in Contoocook to Lanson O. and Susie (Carter) Haselton Brown. A life-long resident of Contoocook, she attended the local schools, graduating from Hopkinton High School in 1940. She received her B.A. in liberal arts from University of Tennessee in 1950, majoring in chemistry and biological sciences. She served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps during World War II and the Korean War. She specialized in the surgical and laboratory units in the naval hospitals and dispensaries. She enjoyed the outdoors. An avid hiker and mountain climber she belonged to the Appalachian Mountain Club. She climbed all of the 4,000 footers in New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. Family includes a cousin; nieces; nephews. SERVICES: There are no calling hours. Graveside services are Tuesday at 11 a.m., at Contoocook Village Cemetery in Contoocook Village.
