Barbara Jo Mitchell, 64 SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Barbara Jo Mitchell, 64 of Las Vegas and Westbrook, Maine passed away on Feb. 2, 2013 at the Millcreek Health Center in Utah after a long illness. Born August 5, 1948 in Westbrook she is the daughter of Lawrence 'Joe' and Alberta Mitchell. Barbara grew up in Westbrook and was a graduate of Westbrook High School class of 1966. Barbara was in a motorcycle accident in the summer of 1965 which left her totally blind. After three months in the intensive care unit at Maine Medical Center where doctors told her she might never walk again Barbara was determined to walk down the aisle to receive her diploma with her class, which she did proudly. Barbara went on to graduate from the University of Southern Maine with a bachelor's degree. She pursued her Master's degree at the University of Maine in Orono where she met and married Robert Bowers from Massachusetts. Barbara worked as a guidance counselor at Perry High School for a year before moving to Boston where she became the Director for Elderly Services overseeing a call center at Boston City Hall. She had three Guiding Eye Dogs during her working years. Later she divorced and moved to Las Vegas to live with her older sister Elizabeth. Barbara was very outgoing and loved spending time with her friends and family. She enjoyed reading and had an extensive talking book collection. She loved going out to dinner and the movies or a Las Vegas show. She was an avid Red Sox fan going to many games when she lived in Boston. She came back to Maine most summers for vacations with her sister Gale and brother-in-law Mark until her health prevented her from traveling. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Alberta Mitchell. She is survived by her two sisters, Elizabeth (Mitchell) Benedetti of Las Vegas, Nev. and Gale (Mitchell) Pillsbury (Mark) of Windham; nephews, Keith Pillsbury (Kayla) of Naples, Kevin Pillsbury ( Angela) of Gorham, niece, Caryn Pillsbury (son Kobe) both of Windham. A private burial will take place in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook. Barbara Jo Mitchell
