Barbara Jean Constantine, 58 PORTLAND -- Barbara Jean Constantine, 58, passed away peacefully with family and friends by her side at her Portland home. Her courageous battle with cancer followed the sudden death of her daughter Lynne, 16 months ago. A lifelong Portland resident, she was born Dec. 16, 1950, the daughter of Gerard and Rosemarie Winch Chase, graduating from Portland High School. Barbara worked at Shaw's Northgate for the past 18 years. Prior to her illness she was the front end manager were she took great pleasure in her work and developing long lasting relationships with her customers and co-workers. She had previously worked for the law firm of Monaghan and Leahy, Overhead Door Co., Seltzer and Rydholm and had been co-owner with husband of Portland Motor Trucking. It gave Barbara great pleasure to work with her father in his property maintenance business. She had been a member of the Portland Fire Department Women's Auxiliary, active with the United Way and the March of Dimes and during high school had been a member of a local drum and bugle corps. Barbara came from a long line of civil service employees. Her family was very important to her, especially her grandchildren, Andrew, Carli, Abby and Nathaniel. She is survived by her beloved husband of 34 years, Michael J. Constantine; three children, Carrie Walker and her husband Brian of Portland, Michael J. Constantine Jr. and his wife Tina of Cape Elizabeth, and Jennifer Genovese and her husband Jerry of Portland; her father Gerard and his wife Josephine of Gorham; three sisters, Rita Cunningham and her husband Stephen, Loretta Maxwell and her husband John, Pam Viles and her husband Robert, and two brothers, Bruce Chase and his wife Janet and John Chase and his wife Sherry. She was predeceased by her mother, Rosemarie Chase and her daughter, Lynne Marie Constantine. Barbara was a special and caring aunt to numerous nieces and nephews who thought the world of her. She was a special cousin to Geraldine Colpritts and Suzanne Meserve and a dedicated and devoted friend to many people. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. from the Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Stevens Ave., Portland. Private burial will be at a later date in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland.
