Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sweet Home United Methodist Church for Ms. Barbara Jean Bishop, 65, 935 Litchfield Ave., Gadsden, who died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007. The Revs. Larence Watts, pastor, and Elston McLain will officiate. Burial in Lincoln Hill Cemetery. Watson and Sons Funeral Home is in charge.Ms. Bishop confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and united with the Mount Sinai Spiritual Church, Gadsden, under the leadership of the late Bishop G.W. Garrison and later with the Sweet Home United Methodist Church, where she served faithfully until her death, as church secretary.Ms. Bishop was educated in the public schools of Gadsden where she was a graduate of Carver High School, Class of 1960. She further matriculated at Knoxville College, Knoxville, Tenn., where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1964 in education with a concentration in French and English. Upon her graduation from college, she taught French and English at various schools in the Gadsden City School system for 32 years. She was well known for being a strict disciplinarian who demanded high achievement of all her students.Ms. Bishop was an accomplished pianist and organist. She had a graceful but deliberate and original style that cannot be duplicated. She served as the pianist/organist of numerous churches in the Gadsden metropolitan area in a career spanning over 50 years, including the First Baptist Church of East Gadsden for 20 years and the Sweet Home United Methodist for 16 years.Ms. Bishop was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Nathaniel Granger in October of 1964. From this union, two children were born. She later married the Rev. Jim M. Bishop in December of 1968. From this union, one child was born. Ms. Bishop raised and nurtured her children in the admonition of the holy spirit. She truly believed that if you train up a child when he is young, when he grows up, he will not depart from his training.She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Roderick L. Granger, Charlotte, N.C., Tamilyn Collie, Duluth, Ga., Gerald F. Bishop, Charlotte, N.C.; a devoted friend and companion, Louis Littlefield, Gadsden; cousins, Odell Moon, Alfred Lovelace and Juanita Lovelace, all of Gadsden, Winnie F. Robinson, Jean Ross, Opelika; and a host of other relatives and many dear friends.
