BIRD, Barbara Jane Dunn, 86, of Avon Park, Fla., died peacefully December 8, 2010, at her home. She was born June 11, 1924, in New York City, N.Y., to William R. and Elsie Tausan Dunn, and traveled extensively with her husband, Ralph, who predeceased her. Barbara is survived by her six children, Alison Whitney (Randy), Catherine Volinsky (Bud), Paul Bird, Phyllis Magas (Buddy), Patricia Bird (Marty Layne), and Perry Bird (Richard Martin); seven grandchildren, Salvador Magas (Holly), Christine Bussey (James), Consuelo Walker (Bill), Greg Whitney (Karyn), Carlos Magas, Elizabeth Lynn (Sean) and Frank Volinsky; seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Joan Hansen (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) and many beloved nieces and nephews and friends all around the globe. One of her favorite expressions was "If you can' t have fun, just don' t go to the party" and that is how she will be remembered, as the life of the party. She lived life to the fullest and was happiest surrounded by friends and family. Barbara loved books, music, poetry and especially travel, having lived in many places during her 52-year marriage. Her children grew up in Delray Beach, Fla., Manila, Philippines, Bangkok, Thailand, and Taipei, Taiwan, as Ralph worked for the United States Agency for International Development. Time was also spent in Virginia; Nairobi, Kenya; Dhaka, Bangladesh; Naga City, Philippines; and Kingston, Jamaica; before they retired and settled at Crystal Lake Club in Avon Park, Fla. This began another chapter in her life, retirement and many new friends and adventures before and after Ralph' s death in 1998. Barbara was active in the Avon Park American Legion Auxiliary, serving as Girls' State Chairman. A celebration of Barbara' s life will take place at 3:30 p.m. Friday, December 17, in Avon Park, Fla., at the Crystal Lake Clubhouse. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to www.earthwatch.org or the St. Joseph' s Indian School, www.stjo.org.
