HOMEWOOD Barbara Ellen Miller Johnson, age 73, of Homewood, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elwyn and Mary Elizabeth Stewart Miller; her brothers, Elwyn “Buddy” Miller and Stephen Miller; sister, Sue McClay; and daughter, Elizabeth Phillips.She is survived by her husband, Robert E.L. Johnson; daughters, Debra Cole (Tom) and Lori Farris (Ron); son, Robert M. Johnson (Julie); four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Serving as pallbearers will be David Johnson, Frank Miller Jr., Jonathan Hammond, Mike Mullis, Tracy Owens, and Bill Green.Barbara was creative and flamboyant, the life of the party. She loved life to the end. Every holiday she decorated the Homewood Senior Center and at Christmas, her favorite holiday, she put up seven trees. She orchestrated and decorated the Senior float in the Homewood Christmas parade. Her yard at Christmas one year received the West Homewood Beautification award.She created and was the Queen Mother of the Red Hat Club called The High Order of the Retired Seniors “Hooters”.She was the Bartender/Manager at The Lowenbrau in the 1960's where her favorite band “Three on a String” played. Barbara then went on to a career in Loss Prevention at Pizitz and at J.C. Penney (Galleria) became their L.P. Manager. She would entertain you with her hilarious adventures of catching shoplifters!She loved square dancing and was the President many years for the Frontier Twirlers. She served several terms as President of the Independent Order Foresters, Chapter 1526.Special thanks to her caring physician Dr. Ramy Toma with Simon-Williamson Clinic, the staff at Arlington Rehab, and Mary McIntosh, caregiver and special friend who helped care for our mother and wife.We've lost our “Rock” and invite you to come and help us celebrate her life. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. today, Jan. 20, 2012, at Ridout's Valley Chapel with burial immediately following at Elmwood Cemetery. Pastor Tommy Hannah will officiate. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) in Homewood.
