Obituary of Barbara-Elaine Peters

Barbara Elaine Peters, 83 OLD ORCHARD BEACH -- Barbara Elaine Peters, 83, of 169 Saco Ave., Apt. 16, Old Orchard Beach, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 18, 2011, at Seaside Nursing and Retirement in Portland, and is now resting in the arms of our Lord and Savior. She resided at Seaside Retirement for two years. Beacon Hospice came to Seaside during the past 14 months because my brother and I had requested she remain at Seaside so she could stay in the same bed with window view of Back Cove and the community gardens of Payson Park. She was born in Biddeford on Oct. 22, 1927, the daughter of Carl H. Davis and Hazel Mae Cleaves. She graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1945 and also of Bellpiers Beauty School in Lewiston. She owned and operated her own beauty salon in Old Orchard Beach for 34 years, retiring in 1989. She was a volunteer for the Salvation Army for many years. She was a former member of Washington Avenue United Methodist Church in Old Orchard Beach and attended Bible Baptist Church in Saco. She was predeceased by brothers, Kenneth Davis in 2005, and Richard Davis, and two sisters, Helen Webster in 1995, and Hazel Scanlon in 1998. She is survived by her son, Dennis L. Pittfield and his wife Susan of Hollis, a daughter, Lynette Feeney of Falmouth; a brother, Robert Davis of Florida, two sisters, Arlene Fitzgerald of Portland, Marjorie Kostival and her husband Andy of Parkside, Pa.; three grandchildren, Cheryl Ferland and her son Brandon of Florida, Jeffrey R. Feeney, his wife Lynda, and sons Zachary and Daniel of Georgia, and Darrell Pittfield, his wife Gina, and their children Alexis, Sean and Jacob of Florida. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Our mother had a strong faith in God and lived her life following HIS teachings. She attended bible study groups both at church in younger years and then at friend's homes in her later years. Our mother was an avid birder so my brother and I brought in her bird feeder and placed it in front of her window so she could Barbara Elaine Peters continue watching birds. Mother loved gardening and beautiful flowers. Every week we would bring in a bouquet of flowers for her room and every holiday her window decorated for whatever holiday. Mother was loved by many and received cards right up to the end. We wish to give heartfelt thanks to the staff at Seaside who gave mom such excellent care. Mother always had a smile on her face every time someone came into her room to tend to her; gracious at all times. We also wish to give our heartfelt thanks to Beacon Hospice, RN's, CNA's, David, her chaplain, and Annette, hospice social worker, who were extremely helpful to me. Thanks to Clarence and other Beacon volunteers I never met but you know who you are. Our heartfelt thanks to all who visited mom during her last two years. To Leona who took care of mom's mail, cleaned her apartment, came to visit mom when we decided mom could not return home; to Phyllis who took mom to church before she went into Seaside; to all the women at Pleasantwood Estates who were such wonderful friends to our mother; to Deeba, the manager of Pleasantwood Estates; and finally to Alice, mother's roommate, a guardian angel in the flesh. She and mom had the same cheesecake picture. Same pose: Alice dressed in red, mother dressed in white. A memorial service to celebrate Barbara's life will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 11 a.m., at the Bible Baptist Church, Ferry Road, in Saco. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco are in charge of the arrangements. www.dcpate.com.
