Obituary of Bonnie-Lee Smith


WATERVILLE -- "Although it is difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow."Bonnie Lee Smith, 62, of Sidney, loved life and fought very hard for seven years against a difficult illness. Sadly, she lost her battle on March 11, 2013. She was born in Bangor on June 1, 1950, the daughter of Gordon W. and Gloria R. (Farr) McPhail.She graduated from Edward Little High School and continued on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from the University of Maine.Bonnie worked at Colby College for 26 years, most recently as the associate director of human resources, until she retired in 2012. She was very active in both her community and the Colby community, working on committees, boards and outreach programs. Bonnie was very charitable and frequently gave her time and money to help others. She was especially passionate about causes related to animals and the environment.Bonnie was an amazingly positive person who loved to have fun. She enjoyed reading, music, movies, going to the beach and spending time with family and friends. She adored her family, and especially loved being with her granddaughter and her devoted pets. She was always smiling and laughing and had a sunny outlook on life despite any challenge. Bonnie had a very kind heart, was always thinking of others, and was always available to lend an ear or offer a kind word. She loved life and was always ready for the next adventure. Bonnie is survived by her son, Matt Smith; her daughter, Pam Gold, and her husband, Dan; her granddaughter, Haley; her parents, Gloria and Gordon McPhail; her sister, Mary Lou Caron, and her husband, Ken; her niece and nephew, Kim and Jeremy Caron; her loving cat, Kitty; and many other wonderful and supportive family, friends and co-workers.A celebration of her life will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, at the Lorimer Chapel on the Colby College campus in Waterville.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Humane Society Waterville Area, 100 Webb Road, Waterville, ME 04901. The family of Bonnie wishes to thank the amazing and caring nurses, staff members and doctors at Oak Grove Rehabilitation Center, MaineGeneral HealthReach Hospice and Massachusetts General Hospital.Arrangements under the care and direction of Dan & Scott's Cremation & Funeral Service, 445 Waterville Road, Skowhegan.
