Betty Jean Cook Smith, born November 17, 1925, in Fremont, Nebraska, died at home in Montgomery, Alabama, June 8, 2012. She was blessedly happy and healthy to the end.She is preceded in death by her loving husband, John Gardner Smith. She is survived by her five children: Susan (Nelson Gerber), Janet (Jim Kotos), Linda (John White), Julie (Mark Gantt) and John (Beth Collier); and by her six grandchildren: John Nelson, Zoe, Zachary, Lynda, Eliza, and Gina; and by her great-grandchild: Madelyn.Before moving to Montgomery with her young family, she lived in Colorado, and, as a member of the Pikes Peak Square Dance Group in the 1940's, she taught Arthur Murray to square dance while on tour in New York. She began her 52-year career of civil service at 2d Air Force, Army Air Force, in Colorado Springs in 1944. She was in the Montgomery Air Defense Sector/ 32 Air Division at Gunter Air Force Base during the Cuban Missile Crisis and migrated to Maxwell Air Force Base where she spent over 32 years. Her career culminated in December 2006 as the Executive Assistant to the Director, Plans and Programs Air University, the Intellectual and Leadership Center of the Air Force.She attended the Church of the Holy Comforter for more than 50 years, where she served for many years as the church's Treasurer of Episcopal Church Women and as a member of the Choir. She had also served as clerk to the Vestry, taught Sunday School, and participated in Guild activities: St. Ann's, St. Lydia's and most recently as Chair, St. Mary's Guild. She also presented her companion Tori, Yorkshire Terrier, for the Church's annual Blessing of the Animals. Visitation will be at the Church of the Holy Comforter at noon, Sunday July 1, 2012, followed by a Requiem Eucharist at 2:00pm and interment in the Church's Rose Garden. Please make donations to the Church's Bell Fund in her name in lieu of flowers.
