Bettie-Sue-Phillips Jackson, born in 1933, spouse of Jim Jackson, mother of Shari, Linda, Tenn, James E, II and Jeff, died at 79 years old.
JACKSON, BETTIE SUE PHILLIPS age 79 of Homewood, Ala., longtime resident of Birmingham, born June 1, 1933, graduated from this life into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 4, 2013, and no longer suffers from the pain of the cancer she'd had for more than 3 years. Bettie was preceded in death by her mother and father, Rhoda Phillips Phillips and W.A. Phillips, Sr., and her husband Jim Jackson. She's survived by her daughters, Shari Calloway, and Linda (Tom) Brown, Tenn.; sons, James E. Jackson, II, and Jeff Jackson; grandchildren, Shannon Calloway and Samantha Calloway, Cullen (Nicole) Brown, Kathy (Christopher) Pitts and Jennifer Brown; and seven great grandchildren; brothers, John E. (Denise) Phillips, and Archie (Sharon) Phillips; cousins, Sally and John Berryhill and numerous nieces and nephews. A graduate of Wylam Elementary and Ensley High School, Bettie's lifelong philosophy of always serving others was the reason she became a nurse, graduating from Birmingham Baptist School of Nursing (today Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, Samford University) and Case Western Reserve University and receiving her master's degree from Michigan State University. Bettie served in many hospitals across the U.S. and was director of nursing education at Brookwood Medical Center and coordinator of clinical trials at UAB. An active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the choir, she served in various capacities and participated in numerous missions' trips. Bettie received the Making a Difference Award from Channel 13 TV and the Ida V. Moffett Courage to Care in 2012. In lieu of flowers, Bettie requested that all remembrances be sent to: Trinity United Methodist Church, or SIFAT www.sifat.org, or Heifer International (www.heifer.org). The viewing will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 7, with the funeral to be held at 1:00 pm the same day - both at Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood with Ridout's Valley Chapel directing.
