BUTLER Anne M. Butler, retired editor of the Western Historical Quarterly and Distinguished Trustee Professor, Emerita, of Utah State University, died on November 10, 2014 at Northeast Florida Community Hospice. A native of Somerville, Massachusetts, she was born December 4, 1938, to Jean A. and Thomas F. Maroney. As an infant, she was placed in the foster care of Delbert and Charlotte Theall of Weston, Massachusetts, where she lived for fourteen years, attending public schools. After moving to Baltimore in the 1950s, she graduated from Notre Dame of Maryland Preparatory School. Dr. Butler graduated from Towson State University, in Maryland, and in1979 completed her doctorate in American history at the University of Maryland, College Park, under the mentorship of the renowned western historian Walter Rundell. She taught history at Gallaudet University for the Deaf in Washington, D.C., and as an adjunct professor at the University College of the University of Maryland, the then Towson State University, College of Notre Dame of Maryland, and Loyola College of Maryland. In 1989 Dr. Butler relocated to Utah State University, as associate editor, rising to be the first woman senior editor, of the Western Historical Quarterly, the official journal publication of the Western History Association. The recipient of university, state, and federal research grants and awards for teaching and writing, Dr. Butler was known for her scholarship concerning the history of the American West, especially criminal women, cultural issues, and Roman Catholic nuns. She served as a referee for the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Awards, and collaborated with Ona Siporin, an internationally acclaimed storyteller, presenting Uncommon Common Women: Ordinary Lives of the West, a lecture/narrative program they transformed into a publication of the same name. Dr. Butler was the author of numerous articles and books, including Daughters of Joy, Sisters of Misery: Prostitutes in the American West, Gendered Justice in the American West: Women Prisoners in Men s Penitentiaries, and the multi-prize winning Across God s Frontiers: Catholic Sisters in the American West, 1850-1920. A frequent consultant and guest on television documentaries for PBS and the History Channel, she appeared as a commentator in the series, Deadwood. Dr. Butler also was featured in the 1960s Maryland PBS series Black Is ., and the 1980s Women and the Law, and performed for several years in the Four Corners cabaret melodrama The Drunkard, and productions at Corner Theatre and Vagabond Players in Baltimore. Dr. Butler is survived by her husband, John A. Jay Butler, son Dr. Daniel R. Porterfield (Karen A. Herrling), Lancaster, PA, daughter, Dr. Katherine A. Porterfield (Joel P. Lovell), Brooklyn, N.Y., two step-daughters, Amy B. Barsanti (Henry), Plymouth, N.C., and Jennifer E. Butler, Lafayette, Colorado, and her sister Barbara J. Britz, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Additional family members include William J. Eckert (Marlene) of Ponta Vedra Beach, Florida, and Peter G. Manson (Peter Durfee),Slingerlands, N.Y. and nine granddaughters. Dr. Butler was predeceased by her parents, her foster parents, and her brother Edward E. Oligney of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held in Spring 2015.
