->Old Saybrook - Anne Elizabeth "Betty" Curran, 97, died peacefully at home in the presence of her family on Tuesday, March 9, 2010.Born on Feb. 24, 1913, Betty was a native of Old Saybrook. After graduating from high school she attended nursing school and worked at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Mass. She joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. At the conclusion of the war, she returned to civilian life and her nursing career in Cambridge. She was recalled to active service at the beginning of the Korean War and became a career officer attaining the rank of lieutenant commander. During her career, she served in Iceland, Panama, Newport, R.I., and Memphis, Tenn. In 1969 she retired completing her career at the submarine base in Groton. Betty began a second part-time nursing career at the former Old Saybrook Convalescent Home.Betty was active in her community as a long time volunteer at the Middlesex Hospital Thrift Store. During the course of her life she was a friend of the Acton Library, a volunteer at the Good Speed Opera House, and the secretary of Retired Naval Officers of Southeast Connecticut.A beloved aunt, Betty is survived by her nephew, Paul Curran of Old Saybrook and his wife, Vicky Huang; her nieces, Mary Curran of Clinton and her husband, William Edwards, Kathleen Curran Cheng of Cambridge, Mass., and her husband, Lawrence Cheng; her sister-in-law, Margaret Curran of Old Saybrook; and two great-nephews.She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas Curran and his wife, Arleen Curran, of Old Saybrook and Paul Curran Sr., also of Old Saybrook.Betty will be remembered for her love of family, her outgoing personality, her generosity, and her impeccable sense of style.Betty was a faithful communicant of St. John's Church in Old Saybrook where a service will be held in her remembrance at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2010.
