Obituary of Anne Carter


Age 89, died Saturday, August 10, 2002 at Wake Robin, her home since 1993, in Shelburne, VT. Anne was born on January 1, 1913 in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of Dr. Nelson Gorham and Ethel (Clinton) Russell. She was a graduate of the Franklin School in Buffalo and Sweet Briar College, Class of 1934. She was married to James McAdam Carter in Buffalo, NY on March 14, 1936. An avid sportswoman, she taught skiing at Glenwood Acres and Kissing Bridge Ski Areas for 25 years, therapeutic horseback riding and adaptive winter sports at her Clarksburg home in Eden, NY. She enjoyed swimming, tennis, cross country, skiing, showshoeing, canoeing, camping, golf and in earlier years, horseback riding, field hockey, lacrosse, basketball and baseball. She was also an active volunteer in schools, she was a member of the Bluestocking Women's Club of Buffalo, and served on several Boards including the Western New York Association for the Blind, Red Jacket Ski Club and the Cl arksburg Country Club. For her many activities, she was recognized by the Mayor Frank A. Sedita Good Neighbor Award, the Tonawanda Youth Service Award, the Western New York Association for the Blind Award, and the Visually Impaired Student and Teachers of the Buffalo School System Award. Anne is survived by her six children, James Russell Carter and his wife, Lois of Wilson, NY, Robert McAdam Carter and his wife, Laurie of San Carlos, CA, William Spencer Carter and his wife, Lael of Shaker Heights, OH, Sarah Furman Carter of Windsor, VT, David Clinton Carter and his wife, Barbara of South Hero, VT, Anne Christine Carter and her husband, Eugene Troia of East Montpelier, VT; eleven grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two nephews and a niece, their five children and a grand-nephew. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, James McAdam Carter and two brothers, Dr. Nelson Gorham Russell, Jr. and Clinton Russell. A Circle of Remembrance will be held at Wake Ro bin in Shelburne, VT at 1 PM on Sunday, August 18, 2002. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark's Church in Orchard Park, NY at 3 PM on Saturday, August 31, 2002. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., Hegeman Ave., Colchester, VT 05446 or to the Good News Garage, c/o Ascension Lutheran Church, 95 Allen Rd., South Burlington, VT 05403. Arrangements by the MINOR FUNERAL HOME in Milton.
