Whitman Alton A. Smith, 88, died Friday, April 11, in his home after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Ione D. (Oswell) Smith. Born in Whitman, a son of the late Frank and Mary (Hathaway) Smith, he remained a lifelong resident of Whitman and was a farmer on Smiths Farm. He worked as a leather tanner for Columbia Tanning of Brockton for 30 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Donald Smith and his wife Sheila of Hanson, Gerald Smith of Whitman; his daughter, Judith Lemon of Plymouth; and his brother, George Smith of Stoughton. He is also survived by many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Private services were held by request of the family.
