JACQUES, Allan Edward 1908-2008 Following a long and happy life, Allan passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in his 101st year. Beloved husband for 51 years of the late Lois (nee Johnstone), he was also blessed with a second marriage to Agnes (nee Dunlop) who predeceased him in 2005. Loving father of Carol (Bob Head) of London, Ont., Allan "Lanny" (Geri) of Victoria, B.C. and Doug (Anna Sipos) of Ottawa. Allan was the adored Poppa of Steve, Gord (Milena Sigmund), Don (Carrie Arnott) Head and Matthew (Anne Pleydon) and Heather Jacques. He was much loved Great Poppa to Megan and Evan Head. Proud to be a lifelong resident of Ottawa, he was the son of Caroline (nee Scrivens) and Frederick A. Jacques. One brother Keith Turnbull Jacques survives him. He was predeceased by his sister Hazel (White) and brothers Fred, Donald and Ross. Early in his career, Allan worked for the federal government Trademark and Patent Department and then transferred to the Canadian Manufacturers' Association working in a similar field until 70 years of age. Music was always a central part of Allan's life. A skilled musician, he played clarinet, saxophone and trumpet in Berkeley Kidd's Orchestra seven nights a week. Later, in his 50's, he mastered the trombone. A Life Member of the Britannia Yacht Club (BYC), Allan joined the club in 1933 and served two terms as Commodore in 1947 and 1985. His passion for competitive tennis continued well into his 90's. His unique bridge techniques frequently surprised his opponents in the BYC bridge club. He loved his many friends at the BYC and treasured the special times he spent with them and with Jeanne and Tom Fuller and family aboard the "Fair Jeanne". The family thanks the exceptional staff at the Redwoods Retirement Residence for ensuring his comfort and happiness and also thanks his fellow residents for their friendship while he resided there. He attributed his long life to a big glass of orange juice every morning and finding joy in each day. Relatives and friends will be received at the Garden Chapel of the Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean, on Thursday, August 7, 2008 from noon to 2:00 p.m. followed by a service in the chapel at 2:00 p.m. A private inurnment will be held at Pinecrest Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, please perform a kind deed in Allan's memory - and drink a glass of orange juice! Condolences, tributes or donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com .
