Alice Quinn, 93, and a resident of Union, N.J., for 66 years, died peacefully at home on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, after a long illness. The viewing is Monday, Jan. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at McCracken Funeral Home in Union, N.J., followed by a funeral service at St. Michael's Church on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 10:15 a.m. Born Alice Kniazuk on Jan. 10, 1921, in Wilkes Barre, Pa., a coal mining community in eastern Pennsylvania, Mrs. Quinn was of Russian descent. Both of her parents were born in Russia and immigrated to the U.S. in 1913 prior to the Russian Revolution and World War I. They met in the States, and after the war moved from Wilkes Barre to Elizabeth, N.J., where Mrs. Quinn was raised. She spoke Russian at an early age and was proud of her Russian heritage, often referencing the city of Minsk, the capital of Belarus, when discussing her background. Mrs. Quinn graduated from Battin High School in Elizabeth, N.J., in June 1939 prior to the start of World War II. She was a good student, graduating seventh overall in her class and number one among students taking a non-collegiate tract. After high school, Mrs. Quinn immediately sought employment as part of the war effort, working as an administrative secretary for three different defense plants. Throughout her life, she excelled at dictation, stenography, and typing and had an excellent command of the English language. In 1947, two years after the war ended, she married Daniel Patrick Quinn, an accountant; then moved to Union, N.J., to raise a family. In the early 1960s, Alice returned to work as an executive secretary, ultimately focusing on the pharmaceutical industry. She retired from Schering-Plough in 1984 at the age of 63 after more than 20 years. Throughout her career, she was known as an efficient, dependable worker who was consistently praised for her positive attitude, professionalism, and high standards. Mrs. Quinn was a devoted member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and a member of the St. Michaels Seniors and the Union Township Senior Center. Mrs. Quinn was the last surviving sibling of six children. She is best remembered as a loving wife and mother, wonderful homemaker, favorite aunt, and a doting grandmother who cared deeply about her family. Mrs. Quinn is survived by her two daughters, Eileen Hearn of Watchung, N.J., and Kathleen Quinn of Union, N.J.; her son-in-law, Robert Hearn; her granddaughter, Erin Hearn of Dallas, Texas, and her grandson, Mitchell Ben-Asher of Hillsborough, N.J., as well as many nieces and nephews.
