Alice Marion Doud Jackson, age 103, born in Corning on April 9, 1911, passed away suddenly on Monday, November 3, 2014. She was the daughter of Claude F and Theresa Davis Doud. Her life spanned over a century. She remembered dirt roads and gaslights in Corning, as well as, the introduction of electricity, telephones, televisions, airplanes and computers. At the time of her death, she was still living in the house where she was born. She attended Corning elementary schools and graduated from Corning Free Academy in 1929. After CFA, she enrolled at the Corning Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as an RN in 1932. As a teenager and adult, she spent many summers camping with her father and family at Indian Lake, in the Adirondacks Mountains. On one of these trips, she met her future husband, John Maurice Jackson, a Canadian living in New York City. They were married on December 13, 1935 at the Corning First Methodist Church, of which she was a lifelong member. Although she lived in a few other locations between 1935 and 1943, she lived most of her life in Corning.Professionally, Alice worked as an RN at the Corning Hospital, Pine Manor Nursing Home and in private duty. Recently, she had been using a computer for reading books and to SKYPE with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her daughters remember bake sales, where her pies and cookies always sold first. In springtime, she often brought bouquets of lily-of-the-valley and other flowers to friends when she visited. In summers, she shared vegetables with anyone who wanted some. Just recently, her grandson took some of her lily-of-the-valley roots and spring bulbs to grow in his garden. She will be remembered as a generous and loving woman.
