KING, Rev. Dr. Albert Edward (Bert), D.D. (Hon.), VE7 FBK (August 30th, 1917 to March 22nd, 2006) Bert King has passed peacefully to life everlasting, surrounded by the love of family and friends. Bert was predeceased by his beloved wife Ethel and is the father of David (Clare), Don (Val), Cathie (Ron Nicholson), and Mary Lou (Glen Jones). Grandfather of Troy, Jason, and Cory King; Nicholas and Brittany King; Meghan, Devon, and Clare Jones. Great grandfather of Mackenzie, Hannah, and Elizabeth; Lexus and Sebastian; Hailey. He also leaves to celebrate his life, his brother, Ernie (and wife Glenna) and his sister Muriel (and husband, Sid Holberton), and numerous nieces and nephews. Born in London, England, to Albert Thomas and Annie King, he arrived in Newfoundland with his family in 1920, his parents coming in service as missionaries. Bert received his higher education at Mount Allison University, Sir George Williams College, and McGill University. Ordained by the United Church of Canada in 1945, Bert served congregations in Cardston, Lethbridge and Edmonton, in Alberta, before serving for seventeen years as minister at Metropolitan United Church in Victoria. Bert often said that the best bad thing that happened to him in life was that he was hospitalized for TB, where he met his nurse and future wife, "Dixie". Ethel Dickson was his perfect mate and the love of his life, and it was because of her constant support that he was able to serve his community and people in so many different ways. He helped found Camp Maskepetoon in Alberta, where he also served on the Board of Alberta College and the Edmonton YMCA. After moving to Victoria in 1964, he became involved with the Vancouver School of Theology, the Victoria Kiwanis Club, and the Inter-faith Centre at the University of Victoria. In his later years, he served with the Oak Bay Municipal Emergency Program and Oak Bay Kiwanis. The Kiwanis tea room at Willows Beach was one of his favourite spots to relax and enjoy the fellowship of people. A worship service celebrating Bert's life will be held on Tuesday, March 28th, 2006, at First Metropolitan United Church (932 Balmoral), at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Allan Saunders officiating. A reception will follow. Cremation being Bert's wish, there will be no interment. The family would like to thank Oak Bay Lodge for their care and attention in the last few months. We would also like to thank the staff of 6 North at the Victoria General Hospital, for making a very difficult time much easier with their kindness and support in his final days. There are many others, too, who have made a difference by their presence and their prayers. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to "Our Place" in Victoria, formerly known as The Open Door, or to the faith, community or service organization of one's choice. 222120
