Obituary of Alan Hale

Alan Hale 1929 - 2013 WILBRAHAM - Alan Hale died at Baystate Medical Center, Thursday, July 25, 2013 after a brief illness. He was born in Springfield to James D. and Katherine A. Hale of Longmeadow. He graduated from Wilbraham Academy, attended Wesleyan University and graduated from Boston University in the College of Business Administration with a BS degree in 1951. He was director of advertising and public relations for Friendly Ice Cream Corporation and coordinated these efforts for close to 400 stores in 13 states. He was with the company 19 years, with roles including office manager, purchasing agent and assistant controller, joining the company in West Springfield, and then relocating to Wilbraham when Friendly's moved its offices. Historically minded, he became executive director of Springfield's Bicentennial Committee, raising over a million dollars to develop two dramatic downtown parks and carry out a number of beautification projects and celebration events. He could tell many an interesting story of Springfield's early days. From 1979 to 1994 he was director of institutional advancement for Western New England College, raising the funds that enabled it to achieve major campaign goals and convert it from a commuter school to a residential campus and to achieve expansions which have recently made it into a university. It was satisfying for him to see it grow. Throughout his life he gave his time generously to many varied causes. As one of four generations in his family to attend Wilbraham-Monson Academy, he established a scholarship fund there in his father's name. He is a former member of the Valley Press Club, and was a member and director of the Advertising Club of Springfield. His civic activities included serving as director and President of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra Association, satisfying his love of music. He was President of the Springfield Adult Education Council, President of the AIDS Foundation of Western Massachusetts, Chairman of the Visitors and Convention Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Minnechaug Scholarship Foundation of Wilbraham. He also was a director of the Springfield Day Nursery, the Zoo at Forest Park, the Springfield MSPCA, and he was deeply involved in the Minnechaug Land Trust (the Rice Nature preserve). He was a parishioner and past senior warden of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Wilbraham. He is survived by his wife, Janet Reed Hale; daughter Jane C. Hale; son Alan W. Hale; daughter-in-law Julie Munn Hale; granddaughters Anne, Allison and Zoe Hale; and by his beloved grand-dog Emma. Memorial services will be held at Reed's Landing, 807 Wilbraham Rd., Springfield, MA on August 10th at 2 o'clock. Memorial contributions may be made to the James D. Hale Scholarship Fund at Wilbraham-Monson Academy, 423 Main St., Wilbraham, MA 01095, or to a charity of one's choosing.
