MANCHESTER -- Adelaide L. "Addie" Walker, 94, died Jan. 22, 2009, at Elliot Hospital, after a brief illness. She was born in New Bedford, Mass., on June 1, 1914, to Francisco and Maria (Cardoso) Avila. Mrs. Walker was employed for 53 years as a weaving supervisor at the Berkshire Hathaway Mill in New Bedford, Mass. In the late 1970s, the management of Berkshire Hathaway asked her to move to Manchester to supervise and teach weaving at the Waumbec Mills. Mrs. Walker was a communicant of St. Andrew Episcopal Church, Manchester. She impacted the lives of many through her love and generosity. She held a special place in her heart for children, for those in need and for her beloved pets. IN HER LIFE: She immersed herself in many civic and charitable endeavors, including Southern New Hampshire University, St. Andrew Episcopal Church, Elliot Hospital, the new City Hall, David's House in Hanover, Easter Seals of New Hampshire and the Moore Center. Mrs. Walker was the recipient of numerous civic and charitable awards. On Oct. 1, 2008, she was presented with the Good Samaritan Award for Public Service from Pastoral Counseling Services. Her husband, Lt. Colonel Frederick N. Walker Jr., died in 1995. She is survived by a brother, Joseph S. Avila and his wife Alice of New Bedford, Mass.; her nephews, David G. Avila and his wife Maureen of North Attleboro, Mass., and the Rev. Msgr. Stephen J. Avila of Mansfield, Mass., and her godchild and caregiver, Ms. Mary Jo Lemay of Manchester. SERVICES: Calling hours are Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St., corner of Harrison Street, Manchester. The funeral service is Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, 102 North Main St., Manchester. The Rev. Dan Collier will officiate. A committal service will follow at Mount Calvary Mausoleum, 474 Goffstown Road, Manchester.
