Ann Agnew Martin, 89, of Canon, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the Brown Memorial Convalescent Center in Royston. She was born on May 11, 1922, in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Annie Jordan and Perry Agnew. She was the last surviving child of eight children – Rachel, Emily Sara, Gloria, Elliott, Lorin, Joe and Perry, Jr.She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Don, and one son, Don, Jr. and wife Rita of Tobaccoville, NC, three grandchildren: John and wife Jamie of Advance, NC; Tom and wife Katie of Winston-Salem, NC; Ashley Morgan and husband Chad Carney of Garner, NC; and one great grandchild, Delanie Beth Martin of Winston- Salem, NC, and nine nieces and nephews.Mrs. Martin was a graduate of Piedmont College where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. She later completed coursework at the University of Georgia in teaching mathematics and reading to young children. She was a strong supporter of formal pre-school education and believed that investments in education for very young children would reduce the overall cost of educating children. She began teaching second grade at Canon Elementary School in the 1940's. After raising her family, she returned to teaching second grade in Gwinnett County in 1971 and later returned to Franklin County to teach first grade at Canon and Royston Elementary Schools. In 1979, she was named the Franklin County Teacher of the Year. She retired in 1982 and became a life member of the Georgia Retired Educator's Association and a member of the Franklin County Retired Educators' Association. In her retirement she volunteered with the Franklin and Hart County Literacy Program. After a career of working with young children, she received great satisfaction in helping adults learn to read. She also helped to organize the first Girl Scout Troop in Franklin County and served as the first Troop leader.In 1953, she and her husband, Don, joined with seven other families to form the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Athens.
