BUTLER, Alice Claire Helms, 83, died Thursday, December 5, 2002 in Naples, FL. Formerly from Dallas, Texas, where she was active in Music Circles and taught in Highland Park School District until retirement, she and her husband, Sherman C. Butler, moved to Naples in 1987. Mr. Butler died in 1991.Born in Butler County, AL, she earned degrees in English, Music and Elementary Education from Judson College, Marion, AL, SMU, Dallas, TX and did graduate study at The University of Colorado.Mrs. Butler spoke often of how much the Montgomery Schools meant to her-from Cloverdale Elementary thru Sidney Lanier High School.Mrs. Butler is survived by sisters, Emma Russell Green, Troy, AL, Betty Lane Ivey, Naples, FL; brothers and wives, Nolan and Catherine Helms, Chattanooga, TN, Joe Ed and Susan Helms, Montgomery, AL, John and Pam Helms, Atlanta, GA. Also a devoted brother-in-law, Howard 'Pat' Garner, Montgomery, AL and many nieces and nephews.Mrs. Butler's first husband, Jack D. Gillespie, Dallas, TX, died in 1968 from injuries received in WWII serving as an Infantry Captain.She was also predeceased by sisters, Willi 'Lee' McVeese and Jane Marie Garner, Montgomery, brothers, Frank Helms, a P-38 Pilot killed in WWII.A memorial service will be held at a later date in Atlanta, GA.Memorial donations may be sent to: Hospice of Naples, Inc., 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL, 34105.
