Obituary of Agnes-Merritt-Flint Finn

Agnes Merritt Flint Finn, known as Penny, of Nantucket, MA, died Tuesday, November 1, 2005, after a long illness. She was 80. Penny was born in Watertown, MA on January 9, 1925 to George Henry and Agnes McKiernan Flint. Orphaned in 1937, Penny and her siblings were raised by an aunt, Mrs. Chester Lounsbury of Greenwich, CT and spent several summers with relatives on Martha's Vineyard. Penny started school in Watertown and was a member of the Class of 1942 at the Greenwich High School. In 1945 Penny was the youngest student to graduate from the Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing. She was a lifelong member of the GHNAA. In August 1946, Penny married Bernard Park Finn, of Cos Cob, CT. They raised their three children in Suffern, NY and later divorced. Penny worked as a Register Nurse at the Greenwich Hospital, the Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern and St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, NY. She returned to Greenwich to help establish the hospital's first Alcohol Recovery Center. She retired to Nantucket in 1992, leaving a legacy of compassionate care. A slight, spry, wry elf with a bright grin and a surprisingly strong bear-hug (and great shoes), Penny spent her lifetime dispensing care, comfort and love to family, friends and countless patients to whom she ministered in the 47 years of her nursing career. Penny is survived by her sister, Mrs. Marjorie F. Maya of Naples, FL a daughter, Pamela Nelon of Hudson, ME, her sons; J. Scott of Montgomery, AL and Joel H. of Nantucket, MA, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her brother, George H. Flint, Jr. known as Bud, predeceased her. There will be a Service to celebrate Penny's life at St. Paul's Church in Nantucket on December 17, 2005; a reception will follow at The Chicken Box. A Service will be scheduled at Christ Church in Greenwich, CT for May 2006; the interment of ashes will follow at the Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge, MA at the family's burial plot. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Penny's name to the Nantucket Community Music Center, Children's Scholarship Fund (attn: Susan Cary), P.O Box 1352, Nantucket, MA 02554 (508)228-3352.
