Player, Coach & Manager AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. A. Woodrow 'Woody' Davis - A. Woodrow "Woody" Davis, age 89, of Augusta entered into rest on Tuesday morning, December 21, 2004. A native and lifelong resident of Augusta, Mr. Davis had retired in 1975 after 40 years with the Georgia Railroad. His family and the Augusta community will remember his railroad career but more affectionately; he will be remembered for his life of sports: both playing and coaching, and mentoring and molding the youth of the area into business leaders of today. His love of sports grew from his days at Richmond Academy where he played football for the Richmond Academy Cadets. He played basketball for the City League achieving appointment to the All Star Team in 1935. However, his true passion was his love for baseball. His baseball journey included playing semi pro ball with the Orangeburg Braves, minor league Pro Ball with the Augusta Tigers and the Jacksonville Tars of t he South Atlantic League and with the Florida State and the Alabama-Florida League. He began coaching baseball in 1939 in Panama City, FL which enabled him to move into managing semi pro teams in Metter and Waynesboro, GA as well as Orangeburg, SC. While working with Georgia Railroad, he spent his afternoons, evenings and weekends coaching and managing local junior teams, most notably the American Legion Battey Post 4, which he led to a State Championship in 1959. He was a well respected, recognized and imposing figure as he officiated local football and basketball but will be most remembered for his ability to lead a group of young men toward a common goal. His tireless work for the Augusta community was recognized in 1982 as the Richmond County Board of Commisioners declared by proclamation that January 14, 1982 was "Woody Davis Day". He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Augusta. He is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Harrye Hughes Davis of Augusta; their daughte r, Mary Davis Ingham and her husband, Ron, Hockessin, Del.; three grandchildren, Sharon Brown and her husband, Joel, Tampa, Fla. Lisa Nalley and her husband, Wes, Greenville, SC, Kathryn Reese and her husband, Bart, Wilmington, DE; seven great grandchildren, Mary Ashton Nalley, Bennett Nalley, Davis Brown, Weston Nalley, Caroline Brown, Landon Reese and Elliott Reese. Memorial services will be at 11:00 am, on Thursday, December 23, 2004 from the First Baptist Church of Augusta with Dr. Rodger Murchison, officiating.
