Monroe, N.C.Mrs. Varie Etta Glisson Brown, 95, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at Carolinas Medical Center-Union in Monroe, N.C., after a period of declining health.Mrs. Brown was born on July 24, 1915, in Stilson, Ga., the youngest of 10 children of Benjamin Glisson and Varie Etta Patrick Glisson. She grew up outside of Savannah in Stilson and later lived in Ellabell. She was a graduate of Stilson High School in 1932. In 1935, she married Russell Morgan Brown and moved to Newport News, Va., as he was serving in the Merchant Marines. After retirement, they moved to Monroe, N.C., in 1976, to be closer to family.Mrs. Brown was preceded in death in 1993 by her beloved husband of 58 years .She is survived by one daughter, Lori Brown Lindsey and husband Frank of Monroe; a grandson, David Russell Lindsey and wife Daphne Funderburk Lindsey of Monroe; two great-granddaughters, Kayla Marie Lindsey and Kristi Morgan Lindsey, both of Monroe; seven nieces; and seven nephews.A celebration of her life is at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at Central United Methodist Church Chapel in Monroe with the Rev. Britt Hadley. The family will receive friends following the service in the chapel.A graveside committal service is at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Pembroke. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 801 South Hayne St., Monroe, N.C. 28112.Arrangements are by Flanders Morrison Funeral Home of Pembroke and Davis Funeral Home of Monroe.
