SMYTH, Sylvia MaryNovember 8, 1929 – June 26, 2013With deep sadness we lovingly say goodbye to Sylvia who passed away peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer, on June 26, 2013 at the age of 83 years; surrounded by loving family as she has been throughout her life. She was a true Calgarian, born and raised here and she loved this city. She attended Sunalta School and Central High School, and then worked at the Calgary Seed Lab. Sylvia married Ron Smyth in 1955 and together they raised four children. Her favorite years were those spent on "the farm" at Red Deer Lake where she made many lasting friendships and ties in the community. Later she worked for the Calgary Philharmonic and had a great love for that organization. Sylvia had an amazing gift for looking at the world in a positive light. No matter what challenges came her way, she always believed that "tomorrow would be better" and she made it so. She genuinely cared about others and spent many hours volunteering in the community, in particular through her work for the Junior League and Inn from the Cold. Sylvia loved tennis and golf, which she played at the Glencoe Club until she became ill last fall, as well as music and theatre in Calgary, playing bridge, and her wonderful trail rides with the Skyline Ladies, all of which were made so special because of the wonderful friends who enjoyed them with her. She was a dedicated member of the St. Laurence Anglican Church parish. Sylvia wanted it to be known that she felt she had a wonderful life and that she dearly loved her family and many friends. She had a strong faith and was at peace with moving on to the next part of her journey. Sylvia was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by her children and their spouses Daryl (Mary) Smyth, Wendy (Mike) Hanrahan, Rhonda Allen, and Glenn (Barb) Smyth; her beloved grandchildren Lindsey (Campbell) McIver, Gary Smyth, Katherine Allen, Megan and Emily Hanrahan, Nathan, Matthew and Shannon Smyth; and her darling great-granddaughter Quinn McIver. She is also fondly remembered by Ron and Anne Smyth and also by Chelsea Buczkowski. Sylvia was predeceased by her parents William and Elizabeth Colpoys. The family extends a grateful thank you to nursing caregivers Jessica and Radhika, and to Calgary Palliative Homecare team, in particular Nishma. We also greatly appreciated the support of the St. Laurence parish, particularly Reverend Anna Greenwood-Lee and Reverend Vic Cabel.
