Johnson, Robert H.Feb. 22, 1916 - Aug. 11, 2009Robert H. Johnson, 93, of Bradenton since 1978, formerly of Glendale, Wis., died Aug. 11, 2009.A memorial service will be at noon, Friday, Aug. 14, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3100 26th St. West, Bradenton, FL 34205. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes and Crematory, 43rd Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include Hila, his wife of 73 years; a son, David of San Gabriel, Calif.; a daughter, Mary Blake of Flagstaff, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren;A daughter-in-law, Cheryl of San Gabriel, Calif.; and a son-in-law, James of Flagstaff, Ariz.Born in Benton, Wis., and raised in Platteville, Wis., Robert had a long career as a high school music educator, conductor and school administrator. Johnson is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Platteville and holds a masters in music education from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He taught at Hollandale, Wis., (1938-40), Dodgeville, Wis., (1940-44), Waupun, Wis., (1944-55) and Nicolet High School, Glendale, Wis., (1955-78), where he was chairman of fine and applied arts (included supervising music, art, industrial arts, business education, home economics and career education). He also taught special music sessions and conducted at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and Michigan State University. Johnson also conducted the choirs at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waupun and St. Monica Catholic Church in Whitefish Bay, Wis.Active professionally, Johnson is a past president of the Waupun and Nicolet Education Associations, the Wisconsin Music Educators Association, the Wisconsin Bandmasters Association and Phi Beta Mu, a national honorary school band directors fraternity. He has belonged to many other music and music education associations, and frequently was a judge for music competitions in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin.Retiring in 1978, Johnson and his wife, Hila, moved to Bradenton. He was a founding member of El Conquistador Golf and Country Club, where he also served as treasurer and board member in the early years. He also served as president of the Raintree and Valencia I condominium associations. Johnson's hobbies and interests included golf, tennis, fishing, hunting and woodworking. In retirement, the Johnsons divided their time between Bradenton and a lake cottage near Land O' Lakes, Wis.
