Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home for Peggy Johnson Smith, East Gadsden, who succumbed to cancer after a brave fight of more than a year, in the early morning hours of Monday, July 18, 2011. She battled to the very end and never let the disease take her heart, her mind or her spirit. The Revs. John Richey, Tommy Ferguson and Frank Samuels will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood Memorial Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct.Peggy was born in Gadsden on Oct. 30, 1934, to the late L.B. "Shorty" Johnson and Clara Nunn Johnson. She attended Gadsden High School, class of 1952. She married J.W. Smith in January of 1953 and started her family in 1954, where she proceeded to become the best mother anyone could ever have to her four children.She later spent several years as the manager of Rutenberg's Shoes in the Gadsden Mall and as a seamstress for East Gadsden Sporting Goods, both fitting jobs for a woman who was always running around, mending the lives of others. She was a strong Christian woman and a member of Goodyear Heights Baptist Church in East Gadsden, and a former member of Paden Baptist Church in East Gadsden and Bridge Point Church in Southside.She was preceded in death by her parents, L.B. "Shorty" and Clara Nunn Johnson, East Ridge, Tenn.; brothers, Thomas Johnson, Bob Johnson and Paul Johnson; sisters, Louise Garrison, Louell Warren and Leola Gowens.Peggy is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, John Walter "J.W." Smith; sons, Don (Debbie) Smith, Saks, Ray Smith, Southside, and Keith (Cynthia) Smith, Hoover; daughter, Kay (Rickey) Wordlaw, Southside; granddaughters, Amy (Brandon) Brooks, Christy Smith, Jessica Smith, Sarah Smith, Julianna Smith, and step-granddaughter, Amy (Jason) Proctor; grandsons, David Smith, Adam Hooks, Allan Smith, and stepgrandson, Brandon (Jamie) Wordlaw; great-granddaughters, Kayla Brooks, Kalyn Smith, Desirae Smith and Alexis Smith; stepgreat-granddaughter, Lauren Wordlaw; great-grandson, Logan Brooks; stepgreat-grandsons, Jase Proctor, Judd Proctor and Brock Wordlaw; brothers, Leonard (Mary) Johnson and Mike (Brenda) Johnson; sisters, Nancy (John) Mount, Frances (Tom) Pope and Sue (Phil) Beeman; and numerous nieces and nephews.And if the palaces in Heaven have backyards, she is standing in hers now, catching up on gossip with her best friend of almost 50 years, Jayne Coleman.Pallbearers will be Justin Coleman, Josh Page, Brandon Brooks, Chuck Medders, Jimmy Sitz, Neal Keener, Johnny Bone and Earl Bush. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Page and Bobby Coleman.The family would like to offer a special word of thanks to all the caretakers at Lawley Hospice for the kind and tender care they gave during Peggy's final days and to the physicians who treated her in the past year: Dr. Lucian Newman Jr., Dr. Lucian Newman III, Dr. Walter Bridges II, Dr. Jason Ayers, Dr. George Douthit Jr., Dr. Thomas Pugliese and Dr. Elquis Castillo, as well as the staff of Gadsden Regional Medical Center.The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening at Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home.To view this obit online or to sign the online guestbook, visit www.crestwoodmemorialfh.com.
