GARLAND, Paula Paula Mary Garland, 82, of Alpharetta, Georgia died on Sunday, May 18, 2014. She died as a result of complications from a head injury which she sustained after a fall. She was born Paula Mary Joy on March 18, 1932 in Washington D.C., the second of three children born to Magdelene M. Joy and Richard T. Joy. Her brothers were Richard T. Joy and John P. Joy, both of Maryland. She graduated from Dumbarton College of the Holy Cross in 1954 in Washington D.C. where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. On February 19, 1955 she married John Louis Garland, originally from Seattle, WA. The couple lived in Washington D.C. and both worked briefly for the CIA before Mr. Garland took a job with IBM. They moved to Bedford, NY and raised three children-Anne Garland Collins (sp. Steve Collins) of Atlanta, John L. Garland, Jr. (sp. Bonnie Garland) of Duluth and Thomas P. Garland (sp. Alison Garland) of Smyrna. While busy raising her family, she attended graduate school at Queens College in Flushing, NY and received a Master of Science in Library Science. Later, both she and her husband worked at IBM in New York, New Jersey and Atlanta and, most recently, Mrs. Garland worked at Crawford & Company in Atlanta, from which she retired in 2005. She was an avid gardener who cultivated the most beautiful roses wherever she lived. Mrs. Garland was a loving grandmother to Timothy Garland Collins, age 25 and Taylor Kaye Garland, age 11. She was preceded in death by her husband John L. Garland, Sr. and her brothers, Richard T. Joy and John P. Joy. A devout Catholic, she was a parishioner of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Roswell. She often attended mass several times a week and was an active volunteer with a number of its ministries. She gave selflessly of her time and resources. Paula had a wide circle of friends with whom she maintained regular contact. She took the greatest joy in being very involved with her grandchildren and watching them grow and mature. "Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy. It does not boast. It is not proud. It is not rude. It is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered. It keeps no record of wrong doing. It does not delight in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres." (Corinthians 13) There will be a memorial mass on Wednesday, May 28 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Roswell, GA, officiated by Father Dan Fleming. An interment ceremony at Arlington Cemetery will be held immediately following the memorial. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The American Red Cross and Halcyon House Hospice.
