Paul Burney Smith - SAVANNAH - Paul Burney Smith, 86, of Savannah, died Friday May 6, 2011 at Hospice Savannah, Inc., surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 29, 1924 in Ogeechee, Georgia, to the late Paul Luther and Daisy Mae Mock Smith. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class. He was also a member of the Georgia National Guard Head Quarters, 118th Field Artillery. He was a retired Conductor, having formerly worked for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad, Seaboard Coastline and then CSX Railroad for a total of 35 Ú years. He was a member of the Chatham Artillery, a member of Zerubbabel Lodge # 15, F. & A.M's, the Scottish-Rite Consistory, Valley of Savannah, and the Flag Unit of Alee Shrine Temple. Burney was a long time member of Ardsley Park Baptist Church where he was a member of the Mark Sunday School Class and a former Sanctuary Choir member. It was at that same church that he attended Boy Scouts, got baptized and later married the love of his life, Mary Julia Hall. He was a former deacon and was recently awarded the title of Deacon Emeritus. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby C. Smith and a sister, Marjorie Burysek. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Mary Hall Smith, of Savannah, Ga; and two daughters, Debra Anderson (Woody) of Daisy, Georgia and Carolyn Davis (Tony) of Savannah. In addition, he is survived by five grandsons, Paul Hughes of Yorktown, Va., Shannon Hughes of Mouscoutah, Ill., Shane Gilmore of Grovetown, Ga., Patrick Gilmore of Savannah, and Gary Hennessee, Jr., of Richmond Hill, Ga., and nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Bette Friedel of Riverview, Florida. His favorite hobby was growing roses and working in his yard but he also loved fishing, bragging about his grand children and great grandchildren, talking "railroad" and enjoying the company of his church friends. He was a loving and respected husband and father, who led an exemplary life and left a legacy to be proud of. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Fairhaven Funeral Home - Hubert C. Baker Chapel. Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2011 at Ardsley Park Baptist Church, with Rev. Sam Khalas, Rev. Buddy Clay, and Mr. Patrick T. O'Connor, officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Remembrances: Hospice Savannah, Inc., 1352 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, Ga 31406.
