Norwich - Olga St. Germain, 96, passed away unexpectedly at her home on 416 Canterbury Turnpike. She was born in New York City, on Dec. 31, 1917, the only child to the late John and Nellie (Kuczek) Diskant. She graduated from NFA in 1937, and married Michael Stankewich, who predeceased her.On July 11, 1956, she married Edward St. Germain Jr., who predeceased her in 2004.Olga worked as a screen printer at the former Ahern Textile Mill for socialization to get away from the family farm. It was there through her union activities that she met Ed and eventually married him. Together they bought the B & E Grill in Plainfield, which they operated for 30 years until retirement. Olga was a fabulous cook known for her potato salad and became the "super soup" lady to many. She also enjoyed traveling all over the U.S. and Canada, visiting relatives but her favorite place was Virginia Beach. While she was an avid reader, she could not be kept still and stayed active swimming at the YMCA, helping Ed with his vegetable and fruit stand on Canterbury Turnpike, and took care of her mother unil she was 99 and 1/2. Olga prided herself on being an independent woman. She is survived by her only daughter, Anna Alfiero; Wanda Kulos, her "very best friend" and neighbor; godchild, Officer Ryan Spring; and Betsy, her beloved cat.She was predeceased by her parents, both husbands, infant son, Michael Stankewich Jr., and her son-in-law, Donald L. Alfiero. Special thanks goes to Bozana "Dr. Bo", her health care provider, and the Wound Care Team at Backus Home Health Care Center for the outstanding professional care she received during her illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at the Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich, immediately followed by burial at Maplewood Cemetery.
