LAING, Norma Elaine (nee Prothero) - Died Tuesday, January 26, 2010, aged 87 years. Devoted and cherished wife of Allan George Laing for 54 years. Proud mother of Brian, Allison and daughter-in-law Christine and doting grandmother of Brendon, Robyn and Brittany. Norma was a loving, strong, independent, capable and vivacious, outgoing woman, very much devoted to her family, their education and their endeavours. She was intrigued by the challenges that the world offered and plunged into fashion patternmaking, home décor, house renovation, rental property management and financial affairs, among others, with unbounded enthusiasm. When her children were grown, Norma participated with two friends in the creation of the Canadian Book of Charities, the data for which she computerized before home computers were as ubiquitous and sophisticated as they are now, learning the new hardware and technology on her own -- one measure of the interest and determination that she brought to the many projects that she embraced. Being a housewife did not begin to satisfy Norma's quest in life. We wish to express our most sincere thanks and appreciation to the caring and helpful staff of the Bloomington Cove Long Term Care facility in Stouffville for their sensitive and thoughtful ministering to Norma during the seven years that she was a resident of their establishment. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday at York Visitation, Chapel and Reception Centre, 160 Beecroft Road, North York, 416-221-3404. Her Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 10 a.m. with the interment on the grounds followed by a gathering of friends and relations at the Reception Centre. Flowers from immediate family only please. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society.
