Mary Lula (Randolph) Miller, Conway, passed away on November 17, 2009 in the Missouri Veterans' Home in Mt. Vernon, Mo. Mary Lula was born October 21, 1919 to Mitchell E. Randolph and Nora E. (Davison) Randolph at their farm home in the area of the present Camp Arrowhead east of Marshfield, Mo. She made many friends while attending school at Fair Grove, Elkland, Springfield and Marshfield. The family moved to California in 1936 where she graduated from Sanger High School. After they returned to Missouri, Mary Lula started working for L. E. Garst and the Marshfield Telephone Co. She was working the switchboard when word came of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. She always remembered the board being lit up like a Christmas tree with all the calls being made. In 1942, Mary Lula joined the Women's Auxiliary Corps. Her fiancé, Jake, was stationed at San Antonio, where they were married in the Presbyterian Church. Mary Lula's church affiliations include membership in the Disciples of Christ and after her marriage she joined the Methodist Episcopal and much later membership in the Presbyterian USA. In recent years, Mary Lula and Jake were attendees of Happy Home Cumberland Presbyterian Church. After the war, she and Jake lived in Marshfield for a year or so, and then moved to the Tom Vestal place, east of Conway. From there they moved to the Sarah Rice farm west of Conway, where they added to the house using salvage material from the original Happy Home church building. During this time, Mary Lula was cooking for the helpers, holding the end of a board or handing Jake a wrench. Mary Lula was "Worthy Matron" of the Marshfield Chamber of the Eastern Star while Doc Blinn was "Worthy Patron". She attended each meeting, and on occasion, even drove the old pea green pickup wearing her formal attire. Mary Lula was the Secretary of the School Board and to the Superintendent of Conway High School for twenty-seven years. She was an avid sports fan and didn't miss many home games to cheer on the teams. Many of the children knew her as Mrs. Miller, Mary Lula, Lu or Mary Lu. It didn't matter, she was always there for them. After they retired, they enjoyed traveling from coast to coast to visit family. They later moved to Springfield, then Idaho, then back to Springfield, and finally to the State Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, where she celebrated her 90th birthday. The above picture was taken that day. Mary Lula is survived by her husband, Jacob; son, Mikel; daughter, Sherry; three grandsons, Nathan, Sean and Bradley; two great-grandsons, Jackson and Nicholas; and Jake's sister, Helen. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Geraldine and Loy Maybelle. There will be a joint memorial service at a later date under the direction of Fraker Funeral Home, Marshfield, Mo. We would hope that any memorial contributions be given to the Conway Senior Citizen's Center.
