MARY LOUISE SMITH Mary Louise Hoenshel Smith, 93, of Stuart, Florida died on Saturday, March 7, 2009. A Florida native, she was born in Homestead on July 26, 1915 to Amy Rhodes Hoenshel and Paul Moffett Hoenshel. She was a resident of Stuart for 70 years. Her childhood was spent at Cypress Lodge in Port Mayaca. Mary Louise graduated from Pahokee High School and Florida State College for Women. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. While working at Cypress Lodge after college, she met Stanley Smith from New Jersey who came to Florida to grow vegetables. They were married at Cypress Lodge in Port Mayaca on November 4, 1938. In 1939, Mary Louise and Stan moved to Stuart where he pioneered growing chrysanthemums. She was a devoted member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church of Stuart. She served on the Altar Guild and was a member of Episcopal Church Women. A founder of the church's thrift shop, The Cracker Barrel, Mary Louise was a volunteer there for over 45 years. She was also a 65 year member of Chapter P, PEO and a member of Questers. Her cooking was enjoyed by many and her recipes are compiled in her cookbook, "Mama's Family Favorites". Mary Louise also enjoyed sewing and playing bridge. She and Stan traveled all over the world. Survivors include her children: Carol Ann (Harry) Snyder, Paul A. (Christina) Smith, Amy Louise Busteed, Elsie Jean (Carl) Stewart and Howard M, Smith, all of Stuart; her grandchildren: Vonne Smith, Merrell Smith, Robert Snyder, David Snyder, Linda Kay Richards, Richard Rice, Ryan Rice, Rachel Stewart and Sarah Stewart; her great-grandchildren: Jack and Lydia Snyder, Calli Anna and Jensen Richards, Randy and Riley Rice, and Lily Rice. Also surviving is her sister, Virginia Riley, of Sacramento, California. She was pre-deceased by her husband Thomas Stanley Smith in 1991; her son Thomas Stanley Smith, Jr. in 1955; and her grandson Frank Snyder in 1970. Memorial contributions may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart, Fl 34997 or St. Mary's Cracker Barrel, 623 E. Ocean Blvd, Stuart, Fl 34994. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 14th at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Stuart. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Martin Funeral Home & Crematory, Stuart.
