KEYES _ Mary Elizabeth (nee Anderson) August 31, 1902 - January 7, 2003 Died January 7, 2003 in Calgary at the age of 100 years. Born in North Dakota, Mary was raised in Moose Jaw. She graduated from nursing in 1926 and moved to California. Mary married Thomas E. Keyes, who predeceased her in 1989. The family lived in Regina, Toronto, Calgary and then moved to Richmound, SK, in 1945 where Mary provided volunteer nursing services. In 1951, they moved to Maple Creek, SK, where Mary became Director of Nursing at the hospital. She retired to Calgary in 1967, becoming an avid bridge player and enjoying an active retirement. She was a strong woman whose resolve enabled her to raise five children during the Depression. She was not shy to express her opinions and did not stand idly by when confronted by any injustice, intolerance, or incompetence. She challenged life head-on and left us many gifts; a sense of duty, tenacity, self-confidence and, above all, a call to action. For her inspiration, we will always be grateful. She is survived by her five children, Joan (Frank) Metz, Calgary, Joe (Cristina) Keyes, Fort Worth, Texas, Edward Keyes, Toronto, Kathleen Gieg, Regina, and Walter (Catherine) Keyes of Regina. She also leaves behind fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, having been predeceased by one granddaughter. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Rod Place and the staff at Father Lacombe Nursing Home for the excellent care Mary received during the last years of her life. A private Memorial Service for the family will be held at Father Lacombe Nursing Home on Thursday, January 16, 2003. Interment will be in the Moose Jaw Cemetery in June. 149269
