MARION Martha Frances Whitehead Williams, age 76, of Marion, died peacefully at home with her family on Dec. 25, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, in the Ramsay-McCrummen Chapel on the campus of Judson College with Rev. Dr. Daniel Thornton, Rev. Dr. Larry Teasley, and the Rev. Jim Waters officiating. Burial followed at the Marion Cemetery with Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel directing. The daughter of the late Kathleen and Roy Whitehead of Webb, Ala., Mrs. Williams was born on Feb. 22, 1934. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dr. George Charles Williams; her sister, Mary Glenn Havard of Fairhope, Ala.; daughters, Susan Margaret Lepscier of Las Vegas, Nev. and Dr. Mary Blanche Williams Wagner of Birmingham; and grandchildren, Wells Frederic Wagner and Mary Elisa Wagner. Mrs. Williams earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Education from the University of Alabama. During her tenure at Judson College from 1966 to 1998 as a faculty member in the business department, as superintendent of the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame, and as registrar, Mrs. Williams touched the lives of many students and colleagues. She became a “Judson girl” in 2009 when the Judson College Alumnae Association named her an honorary alumna.Mrs. Williams served as organist at Marion Presbyterian Church for 21 years, and in 1999 returned as organist to Marion United Methodist Church, where she was a member since 1966 and where she taught Sunday school.In 2009 she received a History Preservation Award for her efforts in preserving the history of Perry County.Mrs. Williams was an active member of numerous professional and service organizations; most treasured was her membership in The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary society for key women educators. In August 2010 she received the Beta State Achievement Award, the highest award at the state level. In December, Christmas programs at Judson College and Marion Military Institute were dedicated to her in recognition of her enthusiastic support of fine arts in the Marion community.Mrs. Williams recently celebrated 28 years of writing “Martha's Vineyard,” a weekly column of community news in the Marion Times-Standard. Pallbearers were Dr. David Potts, Dr. Paul Reitzer, Dr. Thomas Wilson, Mr. Anthony Long, Mr. Roy Barnett, Mr. Robert Eiland, Mr. Jack Wood, Mr. Tim Tucker, Dr. Jack Fowler, Mr. William Henry Stewart, Jr., and Mr. Ronald Havard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Judson College, 305 Bibb Street, Marion, AL 36756.
