NEWPORT -- J. Paul Hoffman III, 80, died Jan. 4, 2013, at a Brewer nursing home. He was born Oct. 22, 1932, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of John Paul and Elizabeth (Odman) Hoffman II. He served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division and the Marines, both in Korea. He was a life member of Corinna Post 73 American Legion. Paul owned and operated Gannon's Station CafŽ in Massapequa Park, Long Island, N.Y. He moved to Maine in 1985 and was a deputy sheriff for Somerset County. Paul was a Mason and a Shriner at Anah Shrine, Bangor. He is survived by three sons: J. Paul Hoffman IV and his wife, Rebecca, of Newport, Arthur Hoffman and wife, Susan, of Fort Myers, Fla., Kyle Hoffman and wife, Onawa, of Indian Island; a daughter, Margaret "Linda" Shannon and husband Dennis, of Clinton; a brother, Howard Lustgarden and wife Barbara, of Endicott, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Paul was predeceased by his wife, Margaret June Hoffman; and a brother, Gary Lustgarden. Friends may call from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shrine Hospital for Children, c/o Anah Shrine, P. O. Box 735, Bangor, ME 04402.
