John I. Burginof FranklinJohn I. Burgin, 80, of Franklin, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2002, at the AO Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta. He was born May 28, 1922, in Franklin, the son of George O. and Isabelle H. (Penfield) Burgin. He married Patricia Jane Russell on July 22, 1950, in Glens Falls, N.Y. John was a graduate of Bainbridge Central School. John served in the US Navy during WWII, and was discharged as a Special Artificer Optical Second Class. John was awarded the following: WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal, and the Good Conduct Metal. He was active with the US Navy Veterans Organization with shipmates from the USS Delta. After returning home from the service, he attended the Philadelphia School of Horology for Watch Making and Jewelry Repair. In 1986, he retired from Allied/Amphenol Corporation, Sidney, where he worked for 38 years and was a member of the International Association of Machinist. John was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Franklin, and served on the Vestry, Franklin American Legion, Franklin Fire Department, Ouleout Creek Golf Course, Franklin Central School Board of Education, Town of Franklin Planning Board, Franklin Recreation Commission, Past President of the Franklin Rotary Club, founder of the Burgin Open, and a Charter Member of the Franklin Emergency Squad. He is survived by his wife, Patricia R. Burgin, Franklin, N.Y.`; his children and their spouses, daughter, Natalie B. and her husband Gordie Daniels, Bainbridge, N.Y.; and son John I. and his wife Laurie N. Burgin, Binghamton, N.Y.; his grandsons, Russell John, and Cameron Burgin Daniels; and granddaughters, Patricia L., and Cassandra J. Burgin; a sister, Elizabeth Holt, Frederick, Md.; two sisters-in-law; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Penfield Burgin, Franklin, N.Y.A service to celebrate the life of John I. Burgin will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at 1 p.m., in the St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Franklin, N.Y., with the Vicar, Father Michael Shank, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, where the Franklin American Legion will accord military honors. Friends may call on Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad. Arrangements are being made by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
