He was a native of Huntsville AL. and was preceded in death by parents, John Porter Gunter, Sr. and Virginia Phillips Gunter Smith; sister, Sue Ann Noble; nephew, Darren Noble; step-father, Rufus W. Smith; uncle Houston Phillips. Mr. Gunter was a member of St. Marks United Methodist church where he was long time custodian at the church when it was located on Main St. He also worked for Davis Grocery for many years. Mr. Gunter was an artist at heart. He decorated pumpkins and plates, for festive occasions. He is survived by his brother, Whit Smith and wife Nancy, sister, Ginny King; nieces and nephews, Virginia and Will Eells, Harold Ashley King, Wendy Lorelei Jewell, Vickie and Greg Lawlor, Kelly and Ed Medford, Teri and Ed Egnot II; several great nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends. He was truly an inspiration for all and will be missed by many. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Dr. Jim Clardy, Rev. Martha Touchton, Dr. Craig Goff will officiate. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville.Visitation will be 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Thursday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. www.woodfinchapel.com
