DURHAM — Johannes (Jan) van Hoorn, 67, of Durham, died Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Hyder Family Hospice in Dover.Jan was born in Tilburg, The Netherlands, Aug. 8, 1943, the son of Egidius and Wilhelmina (Theeuwes) van Hoorn. He was educated in The Netherlands at Dr. Moller College in Waalwijk.He immigrated to the U.S. in 1982 and was the owner of Van Hoorn Leather Corporation in Durham. Jan was a "bon vivant", loved cooking for large group of friends, played golf and enjoyed reading. Traveling around the world was another passion of his, for work as well as for pleasure.He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers and a sister.Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Claire (Wouters) van Hoorn of Durham; two sons, Bastiaan van Hoorn of McLean, Va., and Mark van Hoorn of Park City, Utah; his brothers, Theo, Peter, Jac and Wim, and his sisters, Henriette, Angele, Francine and Louise.There will be no calling hours.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 30 at Durham Community Church at 10 a.m. the Rev. Mary Westfall, officiating.
