Jerome W. Jerry Peterson SCARBOROUGH -- Jerome W. Jerry Peterson, 65, resident of South Portland died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He was born Jan. 3, 1943, in Powers Lake, Burke County, N.D., the son of Willard and Irlene S. (Grandall) Peterson. He attended public schools in Lignite and graduated from West Fargo High School with the Class of 1961. Following high school, Jerry served in the United States Air Force from 1961-1963 at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor where he met and later married Pamela F. Peace. Together they raised their two children moving to South Portland in 1969. Jerry owned and operated the Oak Hill Barber Shop in Scarborough for 35 years. While operating the barber shop he held down a second job at various places including St. Johnsbury Trucking and Hannaford Bros. Following retirement from the barber shop, Jerry went to work full time at Maine Medical Center and then for the Portland School Department. Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, tending the various gardens at his home and also enjoyed spending time golfing with friends at various golf courses especially South Portland Municipal Golf Course and Riverside Golf Course in Portland. Jerry was the consummate family man. He was proud of the achievements of his children and their spouses. He was especially fond of his two grandchildren. His eyes would light up whenever he was in their presence. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pamela F. (Peace) Peterson of South Portland; a daughter Tracy L. and her husband Rick A. Gagne of Lisbon, a son Troy W. and his wife Linda Tam-Peterson of Westbrook; two grandchildren, Amelia Grace Peterson and Lucas James Jerome Peterson of Westbrook; father-in-law Herbert W. Peace and his companion Helen Pitts of South Portland; a sister Barbara and her husband Gordon Bracken of Grand Forks, N.D.; and a niece, Barbara Bijanzadeh of Cocoa, Fla. The Peterson family would like to offer their sincere thanks to all of the staff and doctors at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their kindness and support offered to Jerry and his family during this difficult time. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m., on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at the funeral home with the Rev. Phil Shearman officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery, South Portland.
