GAYTON, Jean Chalmers (nee Scarth)It is with much love and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Gayton on November 13, 2012. Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, Ray Gayton and by her sister-in-law Kay and brother-in-law Peter. She is survived by her children Anne, Kathy (Ron), Don (Beth), her grandchildren Kelly (Shawn), Laurie (Mike), Kirsten, Jeff, Claire, Aleia, Corrie (Jason), her great-grandchildren Jacob, Shawna, Gabe and Marisa, her sister Marg and brother-in-law Ross and her nephews and nieces. Jean was born in Cornwall, Ont. in 1927. She graduated from Queens University in 1948 with a B.A. in Geology. She worked for Courtaulds in Cornwall and later for Canada Packers in Toronto where she met Ray. They were married in November 1951 and they were inseparable for 60 years. They had two daughters and a son together. They moved to Vancouver in 1956 and the family made their home on the North Shore for the next 25 years. In 1980 Ray and Jean moved to Summerland. Jean was devoted to her family and they were her first priority in her life. She was a bright, talented, generous, loving, very special, beautiful woman. Jean was a wonderful homemaker and a fabulous cook. She was a gifted tutor who developed literacy programs and taught children and adults. Okanagan University College recognized her contributions by establishing a Literary Prize in her name. Jean and Ray instilled a love of learning in all their children. Jean was a lifelong volunteer with many organizations. Jean and Ray loved to travel and in later years their RV was their second home as they travelled extensively throughout North America and Europe. In 2004, Jean and Ray moved back to West Vancouver to be closer to family. Jean's family would like to thank Dr. Juanita Anderson for her support and compassionate care and the staff of the Kiwanis Care Centre, especially the staff of Lonsdale Terrace West, for their excellent care. Living Well Home Care Services staff provided kind, sensitive care to Mum and we thank them. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the charity of your choice. There will be no service, by request. Jean was such a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. We all miss her.
