October 6, 2004 Jane Shaffer Burke, 80, passed away October 6, 2004, in Houston, Texas. She was an accomplished artist, published writer, and involved in many community philanthropic projects. Born on April 2, 1924, to A. Andrew and Helen O'Reilly Shafferin Syracuse. She was predeceased by her brother John and twin brother Eugene. A graduate of Nottingham High in 1942, she attended Syracuse University, class of 1945. The family spent summers on Carleton Island on the Thousand Islands. Jane's community work included fund raising and public relations for Onondaga Hill Community Association, Onondaga Road PTA, the Syracuse Symphony Guild, St. Ann's Church, Everson Museum of Art, and Syracuse University Alumni of which she became president in 1970. Jane's Christmas Ornament business in 1956 had showrooms on Fifth Avenue. Jane founded the Towne Shop, Village of Camillus Youth Center. In 1982, Jane won an award for her paintings and exhibited at the Everson Museum, DeWitt Art Open, and Limestone Art Gallery. Jane also wrote two books, Willie Shakespeare and Burkes Law. Her work is listed in the Library of Congress and Who's Who of America, 1966. Jane received from Theta Sigma Phi, professional journalism award for publicity. She is survived by her sons, Robert and Michael Burke; daughters, Sheila Burke, Patricia Burke, Mimi Mahshi, and Kathleen Burke; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Church, DeWitt. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Blvd. East.
